About Textually Active
Textually Active began as an attempt to read more, read diversely, and read critically — and to freely use the em dash.
Over the years, it became my passion to provide access to literary criticism and essays on timeless topics, and on works and ideas that persist. So, you’ll find my posts littered with hyperlinks to read some great ideas, mostly for free.
More recently, I wrote about my taste in literature in this post, and my Substack was featured on The Booktender’s BookStack Directory.
Subscribe to get the newsletter in your inbox + links to some literary resources/ideas I love — from Shakespeare to Normal People.
About me
What they said —
“Your essays flow like poetry.”
— a guest lecturer at my university
“We had NidhiGPT before we had ChatGPT.”
— a colleague in my media job (as a compliment, I think)
I am Nidhi Mahajan. I have worked in the digital media industry in India for over 7 years — after my undergrad and master’s in English Literature — in audience engagement, marketing and business development, and correspondent roles.
I have written on literature, media, and culture for notable Indian digital publications like The Quint and Scroll.in. A poem of mine was published in Parentheses Journal and my academic essay on Derek Walcott's poetry was published in INQUIRIES Journal. I sometimes peer-review essays for the open-access academic e-journal Language, Literature, and Interdisciplinary Studies (LLIDS).
I was listed in the International News Media Association’s (INMA) 30 Under 30 in 2021 — a global recognition for outstanding achievement and career potential.
I have given talks for afaqs!, the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) and Meta Journalism Project, and Columbia University and Google News Initiative's Newsroom Leadership Program. My ideas and experiences have been quoted in research by Oxford University’s Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, afaqs!, and WAN-IFRA.
